What Items Are Required for a Hurricane Preparedness Kit?
The beautiful Veranda Apartment Homes community is located in Central Florida northwest of Orlando. Even though the area is inland, it is still susceptible to the inclement weather that frequents the coastlines of the state. Hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean lasts from June 1st to November 30th each year, and during that time, it is not uncommon for roughly 14 tropical storms and hurricanes to form. Of this number, several may impact Central Florida, with at least a few potentially causing wind and flood damage.
That is why it is so crucial for Florida residents to keep a hurricane preparedness kit. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), it’s best to keep certain supplies on hand in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm.
Water & Food
The NHC advises stocking one gallon of water per person per day, for at least three days. For example, if there are three people in the apartment, then it’s best to have nine gallons of water on hand. The same applies to food – stock three days’ worth of nonperishable food for each person in the apartment. Typical food supplies include canned foods such as beans and vegetables, nuts, and proteins such as beef or turkey jerky.
A battery-powered or hand-crank radio can be an important item to have on hand, especially in the event of a power outage or cable line destruction. Radios can be tuned to receive important weather and news updates during a storm and in the aftermath.
Flashlights & Batteries
In the event of prolonged power loss, flashlights with proper batteries can be extremely important. Flashlights provide light that can be used to move to safety when it’s dark, such as at night and in the early morning hours.
First Aid Kit & Home Tools
First aid kits are relatively inexpensive and should always be kept on hand. A kit should be fully stocked with bandages, gauze, tweezers, medical scissors, and a variety of other medical materials. Also, keeping a home tool kit can be crucial as well, especially if a water supply must be shut off or small repairs need to be made.
Hurricanes rarely have a major impact on Central Florida, but it’s best to keep a hurricane preparedness kit on hand just in case. Thankfully, residents of our Mount Dora apartment community have plenty of room inside their apartment homes to keep the supplies they need.
