Spring Training Baseball in Florida
Major League Baseball (MLB) has one of the longest and most grueling schedules among all sports. The regular season lasts from April until September, with each team playing 163 games in that span. In order to prepare for all of these games and knock off the offseason rust, all 30 teams participate in Spring Training each year throughout March and in early April. Players warm up, take batting practice, and play exhibition games against other teams in preparation for the upcoming season.
In order to accommodate teams throughout the country, Spring Training is broken up into two leagues – the Cactus League in Arizona and the Grapefruit League right here in Florida. Each league consists of 15 teams spread throughout each respective state. Several MLB teams have Spring Training stadiums located within a short drive of our Mount Dora apartment community. Teams located nearby and the stadiums they play in include:
- New York Yankees – George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa
- Pittsburgh Pirates – LECOM Park in Bradenton
- Philadelphia Phillies – Spectrum Field in Clearwater
- Houston Astros – Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee
- Detroit Tigers – Joker Merchant Stadium in Lakeland
These are just a few of the teams that play a short drive from the Mount Dora area. Other teams in the Grapefruit League play southeast in the Jupiter and Miami areas, south in Sarasota and Fort Myers, and in cities and towns in between.
