Declutter Your Closet and Streamline Your Wardrobe

Decluttering your closet can be a great way to make getting ready for the day easier, and it can also make your apartment feel cleaner and more relaxing. If you have trouble deciding which items to keep in your closet and which to part ways with, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does it fit? If you’ve lost or gained weight and don’t plan on returning to your previous size, get rid of the items that are more than a size or two too large or small.
  • Is it damaged? If it’s ripped, worn-out, or permanently stained, throw it away. It’s not a bad idea to keep a couple pairs of clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, but beyond that, clear your closet of anything you won’t wear in public.
  • Does it look good on me? If the garment doesn’t flatter you, get rid of it. Just remember not to take it personally if it doesn’t look good on you; no one piece of clothing works for everyone.
  • Does wearing it make me uncomfortable? If something is scratchy, too tight in some places, or needs to be constantly readjusted, donate it. Even if it doesn’t make you physically uncomfortable, but it makes you feel unconfident, don’t keep it. Your clothes shouldn’t distract you from your daily life.
  • In the past year, how many times have you worn it? If you haven’t worn something at all in the last four seasons, then you’re probably never going to wear it again.

As difficult as it can be to say goodbye to clothing you’ve been hanging onto, you’ll thank yourself when your closet is organized and it’s easier to find the things you do wear.
