Useful Tips for Fighting Seasonal Allergies
Many people across the United States, especially in the Northeast and other regions that experience all four seasons, know just how annoying seasonal allergies can be. Pollen and other plant material from weeds, grasses, blooming flowers, and trees can cause symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, and coughing, just to name a few.
Although many people associate spring and fall with allergy season, folks here in Florida actually have it worse than in most parts of the country. We don’t experience distinct seasons like northern regions, but we do experience perennial pollen, which means that plants pollenate all 12 months of the year. That means that we actually deal with worse allergies here in the Sunshine State.
So, to combat seasonal allergy symptoms, people may want to try some of these simple solutions:
Reduce exposure to triggers – The best way to avoid pollen and other triggers is to stay inside on dry, windy days. If it is necessary to go outside, consider wearing a pollen mask and rinsing your skin and clothing shortly after coming inside.
Try over-the-counter treatments – There are plenty of over-the-counter treatment options such as antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays. Be sure to consult with a physician before taking any medications or using any treatments.
Be prepared when pollen counts are high – Check TV, internet, or newspapers to see projected pollen counts. If they are set to be high on a particular day, it may be beneficial to take allergy medications before starting the day. Also, if possible, try to avoid extended periods outdoors during the mornings when pollen counts are typically the highest and most problematic.
