How to Form Good Habits

Bad and good habits alike are partly formed through repetition, and that’s thanks to the wonder of the brain. Every time you perform an action, experience a sensation, or even recall a memory, your brain’s neurons (commonly called “brain cells”) fire off electro-chemical signals to other neurons. The more a particular neuron sends a signal to another particular neuron, the stronger the connection between those two neurons becomes. Thus, the more you perform a certain action – whether it’s flossing or choosing to see the bright side of an unfortunate situation – the easier that action is for you.

Simply understanding how your brain works can go a long way in forming good habits, but it also helps to keep a few tactics and techniques in mind. If you’re trying to establish a good habit, consider the following tips:

  • Don’t ignore good impulses –  When you get the urge to do whatever it is you’re trying to do more often, don’t ignore it! For example, someone who is trying to get into the habit of exercising shouldn’t ignore an impulse to work out, even if they’ve already put their pajamas on.
  • Frequently think of the positive effects your good habit will have – The more you remind yourself of the positive changes that will come of a good habit, the more automatically those reminders will come to you, and the easier it will be to respond to them.
  • Don’t try to change drastically overnight – It’s much easier to commit to small changes than big ones. So, say you’re trying to make a habit of eating more vegetables; instead of going from eating almost no vegetables to having them with every meal, just have some with dinner a few nights a week. Then, have them with every dinner for a week, and the next week, have them with lunch, too, and so on.

With just a little bit of dedication, the good habits you’re trying to establish will someday be effortless for you to maintain.
