Tips for Growing an Indoor Herb Garden

One way to drastically improve the quality of your cooking is to use fresh herbs. However, the cost of herbs can add up, and oftentimes, it’s difficult to use entire bundles of herbs before they wilt and lose their potency. Luckily, with just a little time and effort, you can grow your own herbs indoors and have a constant supply for your meals. If you’d like to grow herbs in your apartment, consider the following tips:

  • Some of the easiest herbs to grow indoors are parsley, chives, mint, and Vietnamese coriander. Novice gardeners may also have success growing Greek oregano, rosemary, and thyme.
  • Use established plants, rather than attempting to grow herbs from seeds.
  • Put each plant in its own pot with quality potting soil. The pot should have holes at the bottom so that it can drain (which will prevent the roots from rotting).
  • Put the pots in a saucer, liner, or drain pan made of plastic, rubber, or metal so that excess water does not damage the table or windowsill it’s on, or the floor underneath.
  • Place the pots in a sunny spot near a window, preferably one that faces southwest. Herbs typically need at least 4 hours of sunlight a day.
  • Don’t be frugal when it comes to using them. Clipping their leaves promotes growth.
