Apartments for Rent in Mount Dora Are Located in a Town with Rich History

Any time you move to a new place, it’s fascinating to uncover the history of the area. The same is true with Mount Dora, which is located in Lake County, near Lake Dora, Lake Gertrude, and Lake Beauclair. This quaint community, full of fun festivals, art galleries, restaurants, antique shops, and natural beauty, also has a rich background that will be sure to interest you.

Lake Dora was named after Dora Ann Drawdy, who was one of the first settlers in the area during the mid 1800s. For some time, the town itself was named Royellou, after the children (Roy, Ella, and Louis) of the area’s first postmaster, Ross C. Tremain. In 1883, however, the town was officially named Mount Dora. Other important events include:

  • 1883 – The Alexander House opened as a boarding house for fishermen; it was renamed Lakeside Inn in 1903 and is still in operation today. Visitors have included Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and President Eisenhower.
  • 1887 – The railroad arrived in Mount Dora, stimulating the economy and drawing more residents.
  • 1910 – One of the original settlers, Capt. John Phillip Donnelly, became the town’s first mayor and the Mount Dora Voice newspaper was established. Donnelly’s home is open to visitors today.
